Garry Oak trees are native to Denman Island but they usually occur naturally around the shore and are not in grassy meadows.
Some of us are growing oaks on our land and hoping to establish the meadow plant assemblies typically found further south.
This is a meadow that has self maintained for at least 20 years, although I have removed broom over the last three years. My oak trees are growing in the little corral.
These oaks were planted in pots in 2007 or 08 and transplanted here after being thoroughly neglected in their pots in 2009 -10.
