Taylor’s Checkerspot butterflies, an endangered species, have been flying on Denman since the beginning of May. Yesterday I was out looking and encountered just one. Luckily it sat still long enough for a portrait.
All the known breeding areas of the Checkerspot are on private land. Denman Conservancy has a stewardship program, informing landowners of their natural treasures and providing advice about managing the habitat to enhance butterfly survival.
